The delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan participated in 63rd session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

63rd session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) began in Geneva, on October 1, 2012.

The State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan is represented at the session by the delegation headed by Service chief Firudin Nabiyev, III rank state migration service counselor.

Opening the session United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres spoke about issues on the agenda, delivered a speech on measures implemented after previous session and forthcoming tasks.

The head of the delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov made a detailed speech at the event. Ali Hasanov stated that since the first years of its independence our republic has faced with occupation of 20 percent of our territory and 1million refugee and IDP problem as a result of Armenia’s foreign occupation and ethnic cleansing policy. Though more than 20 years have passed, the issue of Azerbaijanis returning to their native lands and homes has not been solved yet.

It was noted that the necessity of Azerbaijan refugees and internally displaced persons’ return to their lands has been emphasized in 4 resolutions of the UN Security Council and in documents of a number of international organizations and fulfillment of this demand of the international community is of crucial importance for the guarantee of their rights.

At the end of his speech Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that Azerbaijan Government is preparing “Great return” programme for returning of IDPs to their lands with UNHCR and other international organizations and is ready to do its best for returning of IDPs to their homes voluntarily, securely and decently.

The session attended by delegates of member states, non-member observer states of Executive Committee, representatives of UN agencies and prestigious international organizations, as well as NGOs will continue its work till October 5, 2012.
